Food is one of the greatest parts of traveling. It has a magnetic pull that brings people together. There is something about gathering around a meal that opens people up and encourages community. And food is one of the greatest insights into a culture. The produce, meats and dishes that are staples give context of the history of a place and its people. The duration of a meal can bring insight into the culture’s pace of living and value placed on relationships. People love to share their food and culture if you just show genuine interest.
“If you really want to make a friend, go to someone’s house and eat with him… the people who give you their food give you their heart.” -Cesar Chavez
And trying new food is an adventure. I’ve had my fair share of unusual items (like buffalo bile, dog and “live” octopus), which were all part of the experience of getting out of your comfort zone and embracing a culture. And I’ve found some delectable morsels (talking incredible risotto, scrumptious hokkien mee and delicious coffee) that I can only dream about until I return for more. I want to taste as much of the world as I can and share about the amazing foods I find. Check out the different food related topics below for more about eating around the world.
