An economical way to travel the world is to work while living abroad. It’s an incredible way to immerse yourself in a culture and make money to travel longer. You’ll have opportunities to develop relationships and visit less frequented destinations by sticking around a country for an extended period of time.
I’ve worked in Germany, Italy, South Korea and Australia. Each experience was life-changing and allowed me to dig deep into the area. I’ve been able to get a meaningful understanding of these countries by immersing myself in the culture. And I have developed deep friendships with people from all over the world.
I highly recommend that you work abroad at least one year in order to experience living life in a country other than your own. It will be one of the most important things you do with your life. Read on to help you get started with your options to work abroad.
Work Abroad in Europe: Germany and Italy
I lived and worked in Germany for 4 months and Italy for 3 months as an intern for Camp Adventure Youth Services. The program partners with the U.S. military and places interns at more than 150 sites around the world. As an intern, I helped at the Child Development Centers, working with children from 6 weeks to 5 years old. I created activities for the kids and helped them develop life skills, such as toileting and using utensils while eating. I really enjoyed the work experience, and I was able to travel all around Europe during the weekends.

Work Abroad in South Korea
I lived and worked in Daegu, South Korea for 2 years as a Guest English Teacher. I was part of EPIK, a national program created by the South Korean Ministry of Education. The program brings in native English speakers to teach English to South Korean students. I taught at a primary school, working with students in grades 3-6. It was an amazing experience and a comfortable life. The pay and benefits of the job are great, and the work is fairly easy.

Work Abroad in Australia
I lived and worked in Australia for a year on the Work and Holiday visa. Australia is easily one of my favorite countries, and I highly recommend spending at least a year exploring its beauty and meeting some of the friendliest people in the world. I worked a short time in retail and as an au pair. I lived in Melbourne for the duration of my stay, but I was also able to visit some incredible places in other parts of the country. The Work and Holiday visa is a great opportunity for people looking to travel to really experience a different culture.
